Go Through My Stuff: Adults Carry Too Much

Guys, I’m one step closer to being an actual adult. I recently started an internship at police headquarters, where I’m functioning as a research assistant. Which is cool. Which also means I can’t drag a backpack full of everything I own with me everywhere. So I sat down and figured out what things I actually need on a day to day basis, and realized, Why do I have all this stuff and why do I need it so much?!

Bag overview

Surprisingly, it all fits into my bag, and it’s not too heavy either. Maybe I’m a reasonably competent adult after all.

Here’s the goods:

Updated what's in my bag

You guys remember my penchant for organizing things into rectangles, right? Well, look what I did. I didn’t number things this time though,so you’ll have to figure that out on your own.

In the top left is my planner. I’ve had one since elementary school. I need to write things down to remember them. I can use apps like Wunderlist and Tiny Calendar to plan out things in advance, but I do better when I can physically writing things down.

Underneath my wallet is a little clear pouch I keep things like bandaids and medications. I also keep lens cleaning wipes in there, to clear off my glasses and phone. Next to that are my glasses, as well as sunglasses.

In the top right, I’ve got my compact mirror from the dollar bin at Forever 21, as well as the lip stain I wear all the time. I like really dark reds lately. And then there’s my phone and keys.

That little pouch with the hedgehogs on it was a gift from my friend Anna, who is well aware of the fact that I love hedgehogs. I use it for pencils and the like, since I’m constantly writing things down.

That little round pot is my favorite lip balm ever. I know I’ve mentioned it a million times, but it’s Love & Toast’s Gin and Lime lip balm, made with olive oil. Then headphones, sweets because I’m a little old lady, and some purple mints that are surprisingly good.

The notebook is the most important thing I carry. I write down basically everything, including ideas for blog posts, to do lists that’ll take a few weeks, and things for my master’s thesis.

And finally, I’ve got hand sanitizer, an eye roller, and a hand cream. You can read more about those in my winter skin care post.

What I forgot to throw into this picture because it was actually sitting in my backpack at the time is my Anker powercore, which is a handy little (very heavy) backup battery charger for my phone/iPad/whatever I have that needs a charge.

How do you guys like this Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule I’m trying to stick to? I’m tentatively having a proper schedule, I’m thinking food and recipes on Mondays, beauty products and clothes on Wednesdays, and lists of things on Fridays. We’ll see how that works out, it’ll probably involve me planning ahead and prescheduling posts instead of hurriedly writing at 11pm on a Friday just to stick to my own schedule. Oh adulthood, you really crept up on me.

As always, you can find me on Twitter, Instagram, and by email, thisisnotaquickstory@gmail.com.

Have a great weekend!

I Carry Less Stuff in the Summer

Now that my semester is over, I find myself hauling around a lot less crap. However, I did realize that when I carried a bigger bag, I carried more stuff. But I didn’t need more stuff. And I didn’t want to carry a big bag. So after a couple hours of babysitting, I had saved enough money to buy this super precious bag. After a few hours of intense debate with Desiree over whether or not this bag would be totally ridiculous (we decided it would not be), I skipped off to Francesca’s to buy it, because they were having a sale on handbags.

Look at how perfect it is!
Look at how perfect it is! It’s called the Limon bag, and the little girl I babysit reminds me that it’s shaped like a lemon every time I see her.

The thing is, this bag is tiny. Well. Tiny in comparison to anything else I’ve carried. So I seriously have to focus on keeping it tidy and make sure I’ve only got what I need in it.

summer whats in my bagThis is basically all I can fit into my bag.

1. My wallet

This is the biggest thing in my bag. I actually had to switch to a smaller, soft wallet to get it to fit into my bag. This cute studded one I got from my cousin for my birthday.

2. Hand sanitizer

This is one of the seventy million ones I’ve got stashed away from previous Bath and Body Works excursions. I’m trying to get through my stash before I go buy more. This Fresh Picked Strawberry scent is one of my favorites. I was so excited to find it in the store that I bought maybe five, and also three or four of the strawberry scented foaming hand soaps.

3. Lip Balm

This is Love & Toast’s Gin and Lime lip balm. It’s made with extra virgin olive oil and a variety of good-for-your-skin butters, and it’s surprisingly light and not greasy. It absorbs quickly, and keeps my lips soft and nice even when I’m all dehydrated. I like it so much that I bought Desiree a matching one in Vanilla Chai, and drove five hours to give it to her. Well, I was going to see her anyway, and stopped at Ulta on the way, and ended up stuck in traffic for an extra two hours. But still.

4. Lip Balm/Gloss

This is a Yves St Laurent Volupte Sheer Candy Glossy Balm in Succelent Pomegranate. I picked it up from Sephora a while ago. It’s a balm, but tinted. Very sheer, very not-sticky. Tastes like candy.

5. Mascara

This is my favorite mascara ever. I keep the smaller size in my purse in case I need it, which is rare. Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara. I like it because it’s not too heavy, and doesn’t make my eyelashes clumpy or thick-feeling.

6. Notepad

Even though I keep track of a lot of stuff like hours I’ve worked and blog ideas on my phone, I like having some kind of paper with me to jot things down, like grocery lists or driving directions because I don’t want to have my phone out while driving. This is one of those that you can find in the bins at Bed Bath and Beyond or TJ Maxx/Marshalls. Super cheap, like a dollar or two.

7. Pen

This is a super cute pen. I got it from the dollar bin at Target, for a dollar (duh). It came in a pack of two, the other has pink stripes. I also bought a pack for Desiree and sent it to her in her birthday box. It’s got black ink.

8. Mirror

This is the same mirror from my previous post about what’s in my bag. Just a basic mirror from Forever 21, with little flowers and crystals on it. I think it was a dollar or something. Just from the bins by the cash register. I got it months ago. It’s one of many floating around in my various bags.

That’s all I’m letting myself carry for now. As the school year starts or if I travel I’ll have to move to a bigger bag, but for summer when all I’m doing is running errands and babysitting, this is all I need.

PS: That letter tray everything is arranged in is a semi-DIY. Post on that later.

Go Through Desiree’s Stuff

As you might know (if you’ve been paying attention), I’ve started this series where I ask people (you guys included) to dump out their bags and send me a picture of the contents. I think it’s interesting to see what everyone considers an important thing that they need.

This post is courtesy of my sweet friend Desiree, who may well be my best friend in the world. We met within the first week of being at OU. Not only did we live on the same [International] floor in the doors, but we also ended up sitting next to each other for five long semesters of Arabic class. Desiree is probably the first person I text when something happens in my life, and when she offers to scramble a jet or make someone disappear for me, I’m pretty sure she’s only half joking. We spend equal amounts of time discussing wedding dresses (she’s getting married later this year!) as we do deciding which terrorist group would win in a fight. She’s also the only person I talk about boys with.

She very sweetly emptied her purse onto her desk for me, and this is the result of that venture:

Here’s the goods:
Mascara
Lipstick
Keys
Wallet
Speeding ticket (Desiree! I’m shocked. You? Speeding? Never.)
Book about terrorism in Yemen- GO AQAP
Almonds
Teas
Tooth brush/paste
2 notebooks
Planner
Nike Fit chip
Aviators

God I have a ton of junk

Desiree has a grown up job way out in California, and I miss her very much. I don’t know what exactly she does, so I’m just gonna say she’s a secret agent or something cool like that. Super spy. Thank you, Desiree!

If you want to submit your own picture/description, empty your bag and email me at thisisnotaquickstory@gmail.com. I can be found on Instagram, Twitter, or Tumblr if you really miss me.

Go through Kat’s stuff

I’m starting a sort of series where basically I ask people to dump out their bags and write about what’s in them. This is from my friend Kat, who I met the first day of living in the dorms in college. She’s a sweetheart. We lived together my last year at OU, and once when I burned my arm on the oven while baking cupcakes, she walked a considerable distance across a field to bring me hydrogel patches because I was carless. Kat is one of the best friends I have, and when I’m freaking out about something in my life, is one of the first to remind me that it’s not as terrible as I think it is, and even if it is exactly that terrible, it’s not going to stay that way forever.

stuff

Hello :>

My name is Kat, and I’m Vrishali’s friend from college!
The items numbered in the photo above are the things I typically have in my bag, save for my laptop.
1. The first thing I’ve numbered is my iPad Mini. I do everything on this device – things ranging from paying the phone bill or rent to playing Clash of Clans. I’ve got my calendar and to-do list synced up to my iPad, iPhone 4s, and Macbook. (My phone is in the picture, but it’s camouflaged by the notebook!) I like to document every-day occurences on Instagram.
2. This is an overpriced notebook from Walmart. It was placed on a $2 tag, but it apparently cost #7 at the counter……… anyway, in it I practice writing in Arabic. I’m not very good at it.
3. This is my wallet. I don’t have much to say about it…I can’t even remember where I got it from.
4. This is a pair of RayBans regifted to me by my father. He got them from a patient who trades these things for medicine, I guess.
5. This is my fake-Lacoste coin purse from the Philippines. I love fake brand stuff.
6. Hair clips for my short hair – in terrible need of a haircut, always.
7. A copy of my favorite prayer by Sta. Teresa de Jesús. The text goes, in Spanish:
Nada te turbe,

nada te espante,
todo se pasa,
Dios no se muda;
la paciencia
todo lo alcanza;
quien a Dios tiene
nada le falta:
Sólo Dios basta.

Now, in English:
Let nothing disturb you,
let nothing frighten you,
everything passes,
but God stays.
Patience reaches it all;
he who has God
nothing lacks:
God alone suffices.
8. A pair of my favorite Sony earphones, also in black!
9. I’ve got to have something to write with, you know.
Obviously I like things in black and white and gray – I’m into the minimal aesthetic because of its clean feel! I actually only took this picture in grayscale because of the weird lighting in the room. Anyway, there you have it! 🙂
You can follow Kat on Tumblr at rivailev.tumblr.com.
If you’d like to submit your own, email them to thisisnotaquickstory@gmail.com. Include a picture, labelled, and a description of what everything is and why you have it.

My makeup bag.

I figured that since I mentioned my makeup bag without telling you what was in it, I would dump it out and show you.makeup bag

Look at that, another neatly numbered picture. I’m great, aren’t I?

1. This is just a mirror. One side is normal and the other is slightly magnified. I think I got it for a dollar or something at Forever 21 or something. Right where they pile all that stuff as you’re going to the register.

2. This is a Garnier eye roller, which is supposed to decrease puffy eyes. I haven’t noticed much.

3. Lip stain. I tend to use lip stain more than lipstick or lipgloss, because it doesn’t feel sticky to me.

4. This is the bag itself. You can sort of tell how big it is by the things next to it. It’s Estee Lauder, and my aunt gave it to me years ago with two larger ones that fit the same general color scheme.

5. Tweezers.

6. It’s a brow/eyelash brushie comby thing. What is it called? I don’t know. I always have to separate my eyelashes after I’ve put mascara on.

7. Eyebrow gel. I feel weird without it. Like my eyebrows are going all over the place.

8. Burt’s Bees pomegranate lip balm. It’s the best. I’ve been using it since I was in middle school.

9. Fresh’s Sugar lip treatment in Passion. I think it tastes and smells like lemon bars.

10. YSL Sheer Volupte Lip Candy in Pomegranate Passion, I believe. It’s a super sheer, lightly tinted lip balm/gloss. I like it a lot.

11. This is a mini of Smashbox’s Full Exposure mascara. I keep the full size one on my dressing table and a mini in my bag because I’m scatterbrained and sometimes I forget to put it on. I don’t like doing eyeliner and eyeshadow all the time, so usually I’ll just do eyebrow gel and mascara as I’m rushing out the door.

12. Hand sanitizer. I have a million of this floating around my bag, desk, bedroom, everywhere. Because germs.

Go through my stuff

I used to have the issue of carrying way way too much stuff in my bags, whether it was a purse or a backpack. But now I’ve downsized a lot, realizing that half the shit I think I should have, I just don’t need. So here’s a recently updated overturning of my school bag.

backpack

Look at that, I’ve even numbered things so nice and neatly. I’m great.

1. The very first thing in my bag is my pen case. It’s a bright purple Steve Madden case meant to hold makeup brushes. I got it at a Nordstrom Rack while out with my mom. It holds a surprising amount of pens. I like keeping a pen case in my backpack, and a jar of pens on my desk, otherwise I forget to bring a pen to class. And I just feel so weird writing with someone else’s pen. Is that a normal thing? I just cannot write with anyone else’s writing implement.

2. My planner. Even though I get syllabi from all my professors that outline exactly what needs to be done and when, I like writing things down for myself, so I’ve got all my assignments in one place, plus to do lists of everything else I need to get done. If I’m not on campus, I keep my planner open to that day on my desk, where I spent the rest of my day,and that way I can just go through and get shit done.

3. My notebook. I still take notes by hand, otherwise I get bored and start daydreaming or fucking around on the internet. I still doodle, but at least with my hands moving I can pay attention a lot better. Once I’ve taken notes, when I get home I just type up my notes into outlines so I have study guides ready to go at exam time. Apparently I am insane for this. Huh.

4. My iPad mini. I got this for Christmas last year from my dad (thanks, dad). I don’t really keep many school related things on here, but I do have a lot of books and music and movies, which is great because half my life seems to be spent in airports.

5. My iPhone. This is my life. It’s ridiculous how much I am on my phone. I have this compulsive need to be in constant contact with my friends and family, and my family seems to have that same compulsion. Heaven forbid I miss one call from either of my parents.

6. Soap & Glory Hand Food. This lotion is AMAZING. It gets really dry in Texas sometimes. Some people claim that Texas winters are wet and rainy, but let’s be real, I grew up in Ohio. They invented wet and rainy up there. This is nothing. And since any other time everyone is blasting the AC or heater and the air is dry, I used this so much throughout the day. It keeps my hands from getting all cracked and scaly and painful.

7. A notepad. For writing things down.

8. My glasses. In theory, I need these to drive at night and to see distances when I’m tired. But the thing is, the prescription is either a little too strong or a little too weak, because I wear them for ten minutes and then get a horrific headache. They’re brand new and really cute too. My brother calls them hipster glasses but they are totally not.

9. This is my makeup bag. It’s a small bag I got in the habit of keeping with me when I was in high school, going between my parents’ houses every day. I’ll make a separate post of what’s in it, but it’s a very basic kit for quick makeup.

10. A coin purse. My wallet (not pictured. Great job, Vrishali. Forgetting the wallet.) is thin and gets lumpy and heavy with coins, so I keep coins separate.

11. Lens wipes. I use these on everything. Laptop, iPad, iPhone, and glasses. They keep things from getting smudgy, and more importantly, get oil off things that are going to touch my face. I have so many issues with my skin, last thing I need is more dirt and oil clogging things up.

That’s all that I haul around in my backpack, which is surprisingly not as heavy as you would think. The only things not pictured are my wallet and whichever textbooks I happen to need that week.

Show me what’s in your bag and I’ll put it on my blog! Email me a picture of what you’ve got in your bags, labelled as I’ve done mine, and a description of what everything is, along with a few sentences about yourself. We can make this a new feature. I think it’s actually super interesting to see all the different things everyone carries around. It varied based on lifestyles and the type of person.
